Course Description
Seventh grade English Language Arts is the study of skills in reading, writing, speaking, and
listening. Students will develop comprehension and communication skills. Students will
develop reading strategies that they will be required to apply during independent and classroom
reading. Students will use the writing process to communicate effectively and efficiently. Grammar will be taught in context to texts that we are reading or writing that we are composing.
There will be writing assignments assigned throughout the year. Paper topics will include responses to literature, essays, and creative writing. For larger writing assignments, requirements and grading expectations will be given for each paper when it is assigned.
Homework will consist of short assignments, independent reading and book projects, and writing drafts.
Tests will be given at the end of each literary unit. The test may include vocabulary and essay questions.
Grading:
Writing (including daily writing assignments): 30%
Homework (including Book Projects) and classwork: 30%
Tests and quizzes: 40%

An extensive list of school rules can be found in the student handbook. In addition to those rules, the class created the following list of classroom norms.
1. Be respectful to others.
2. Use common sense.
3. Listen when others are speaking.
4. Have a positive attitude.
5. Always do your best.
If we adhere to these norms, I believe we will have a successful year!
